Hey I was wondering, of the two Disney Beast Songs, which do you prefer, evermore or if I can’t love her? the actual singing in the Broadway song is of course very superior, but in terms of character development I actually think evermore comes out on top. I always feel like If i can’t love her is just sort of the beast feeling sorry for himself a bunch. So what’s ur take?
I guess we gotta just start by admitting both of these songs are So. Melodramatic and neither are exactly well placed in their narratives. If I Can’t Love Her feels like it comes in a touch too early in the Beast’s emotional arc, and Evermore feels a bit too late. Removing them from context and just looking at them as songs… Hmm…
There are chunks of If I Can’t Love Her that I really, really like – the introduction, and the bridge particularly, but I feel like it’s not actually a great song overall. I think the revised lyrics and reprise (”No words have been spoken, no spell has been broken” etc.) are better than the original ones you’ve probably heard on the OST. (that said, yes hello I am here for the angst! More angst please!)
Evermore is just sort of…fine? It’s less dramatic in its good bits vs bad bits dichotomy. I wish it achieved a bit more passion, but I like some of the lyrics well enough. I guess I’m fine with it as a love ballad, but I wish there had been overall more opportunity for brooding over our monstrosity~~~
